Meanwhile Victoria’s Secret model Karlie Kloss (who will walk in the show for the first time this year) ate dinner nearby. “I just went for my fitting right before I came tonight, that’s why I was late,” she explained. “I’m wearing – well, not much – but for my first outfit I have a ten-foot-wide pair of wings, so I am making an entrance. You will know when I’m on that damn catwalk because I’ll knock the other girl off, I think. And I have another outfit; actually; for my last outfit, I have little plexiglass wings with neon lights, and a disco ball around my butt. So you will also notice that one.” How is she preparing? “I started working with a trainer a couple months ago, and other than that, I don’t know … it’s not very vigorous. But I enjoy running, I enjoy biking. Whenever I get the chance, I’m doing something, so I’m pretty physically active anyway. But I guess … I haven’t been doing enough this week.

On walking for the first time: “I have goosebumps thinking about tonight, I’m definitely a little nervous. I just hope I don’t knock anybody out with my wings, that’s all I’m worried about. And I think Kanye [West] is on stage while I have those big wings on, so I’ll have to tell him, ‘Kanye, get out of the way, because these wings are coming through!’ They are — I’m not joking — they’re huge.”
On whether she’ll switch up her signature walk: “I think the only difference [from other shows] is that I get to be me. I get to smile, I get to blow kisses . . . I get to do anything I want on that darn runway. Usually, they’re like, ‘Straight forward, no swinging, no hips, stop, look straight in the camera, turn left, come back.’ It’s very military-like to do a Prada show, or another show. I guess I sort of do my own thing anyway, but . . . this show, they want you to be you, to be the most beautiful you can be and they want you to have fun. And I think that it shows when you are having fun.”
On how she prepped for the show: “Nothing out of the ordinary, maybe an extra couple of butt lifts in the last couple of weeks, but just my regular biking, running, ballet. I don’t know, I guess this is my first time so I’ll find out soon enough if it was enough. My butt will be shaking out there, and I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.”
On hoping to be an Angel one day: “I think that it’s something that every girl dreams of. I feel lucky that I get the opportunity to be here and in a way, live the dream for so many girls. I don’t know how I’m going to do with those wings on my back, I’m either going to sink or fly. Right now I’m just enjoying it, and it’s going to be fun out there.”

The 18-year-old catwalker–better known for her work on the runways of Marc Jacobs and ad campaigns for Christian Dior–will make her debut in tonight’s show (it airs on November 29 at 10pm on CBS, for anyone who wants to watch at home!).

It’s crazy, it’s truly a spectacle, just a whole day of preparing for this crazy show today, being an angel for a day,” she told me backstage. She also ‘fessed up to being a bit nervous: “I was kind of hesitant at first, you know, but once we had our rehearsal yesterday and I put my wings on–I have these huge, 10-foot wide wings–but once you get out there and the music starts, and the show gets going, it’s just going to be one big party. But yeah, I’ve never been in my underwear in front of 10 million people before.

I had to ask about what she thinks about the comparisons to Gisele Bundchen, which we’ve been hearing a lot of–the first model in years to straddle both high fashion and the lucrative lingerie worlds with serious success in both. “That’s an incredible, incredible compliment,” she said. “Not many people are able to do that. Gisele is someone who is a huge role model to me for many reasons, and even being mentioned in the same sentence as her is pretty cool to me.

As for what her high school friends think of her being in the show, she says it’s garnering a whole different level of respect. “It’s funny, you can be a Calvin Klein exclusive or be in an editorial in Italian Vogue and people are like, eh, okay. But this is different. It’s accessible to so many more people around the world. I love being a part of something so many people can relate to and enjoy.
